Sparkless CR
I have an 85 CR 125. I recently started it up and rode it around my block to break it in to go out for a weekend. It only required about 3 solid kicks to get it going. It ran well, however about a week later after riding it around my block, i wanted to do an oil change, and attempted to start it up. Now it won't even start. I have good compression, it just won't kick over.
I've checked for spark, and it appears that I don't have any. So from what I've been told.... it's the COIL. Is that correct? Could it possibly be something else that I'm not seeing? Others have told me that it could be the CDI unit, but that hardly ever goes out from I've heard.
So I bought new spark plugs, cut back the wire a little to get a good copper exposure behind the boot, and tried to kick start it again. I've had no luck. Am I doing something wrong? I hope it is just the ignition coil, because I've already placed an order for the part. Could you help me out with trying to find what might be wrong with my bike? I want to hopefully get it started and go riding.

Personally, I've seen more failed CDI units than I have ignition coils. It could be either of those two or even the stator. The factory manual goes into detail concerning resistance checks between certain wiring connectors to help determine what component is faulty. One cheap and easy thing to try is cleaning all the electrical connections. This includes the ground points on the frame for the coil. It may be that after all these years, the mounting tabs have developed enough corrosion so the coil can't work correctly.
