Spaniards aim at big bike market with this sharp 250 stroker
This two-stroke 250 will spear-head Spanish firm Derbi's attempt to muscle in on Europe's big bike market. And if current development & testing work out, the new machine should be the lightest and fastest sports 250 ever produced.
Engineers are hedging their best by developing two versions, both twins but one a four-stroke and the other a two-stroke. The 2T would be the only 250cc sportsbike following the death of the Aprilia Rs250 due to emission laws. The 2T is believed tobe a v-twin and the 4T a parralel twin. There's a good chance the 2T can be made to work as it uses clean burn technology pioneered by Australian company Orbital.
The GPR250 will share styling with the rest of the GPR family - Derbi is hoping sales will be helped by publicity generated by its 125cc GP team. The race bike also provides the starting point for the GPR250's chassis technology which will mean a state-of-the-art twin spar aluminium frame & swingarm, USD forks and top end radial Brembo brakes.
The bike's high spec. and Derbi's intention to pitch itself as a premium brand suggest a £5500 price tag.
